VIO Lab

The Violence, Intervention, and Order (VIO) Lab is a home for research on violence broadly construed, including political conflict but also criminal violence, and on types of intervention and order designed to mitigate violence. We seek to conduct basic and applied research with implications for both academics and practitioners. The VIO Lab provides a forum for collaborative work on these topics. We are unified by our commitment to this research and use the lab to effectively conduct existing projects and develop new projects together. The VIO Lab was founded in 2018.

Projects AND PARTNERS

Current areas of research include post-conflict consolidation, intervention invited by fragile states, including to reduce election violence, and policing in comparative contexts. The VIO Lab’s current projects are funded by the Folke Bernadotte Academy, the Minerva Research Initiative, and the Peder Sather Center. More on two of our major projects are on Post-Conflict Security Structures and Citizen Buy-In and Security Institutions and Violence Insecurity. Past projects have been funded by the the National Science Foundation, the UC Laboratory Fees Research Program, and others; sponsored by UC-Berkeley’s Social Science Matrix; and we have partnered with the Observatorio de la Democracia on our work in Colombia.
